When a town has its own sweater

Can you imagine chairs or trees wearing personalized sweaters? In the town of Uherské Hradište, custom-knitted pieces are playfully revitalizing neglected public spaces while also drawing attention to this traditional craft. Project leader Eva Blahová and her team are asking other residents to donate unused knitwear that will be used to create new distinctive pieces for public spaces. On the occasion of International Knitting Day in June, the group led knitting and crocheting classes in waiting rooms, cafes and other public places. The project will culminate in an exhibit of the knitted pieces created to adorn various sites in the town’s historic centre. “We want to create a vibrant and colourful space for dialogue between citizens, students and artists. We live here together. We knit. We recycle – and we are bringing to the fore themes like engagement, sharing experience, intergenerational dialogue, recycling and sustainability,” says Eva Blahová.

Let’s knit up the town — together.

Students from the Secondary School of Applied Art Uherské Hradiště created knitted projects with the public along a selected trail through Uherske Hradiste’s streets, where a stream called the Rechla used to run during the Middle Ages, thus livening up the city with their remarkable works of art. Residents of the local retirement home with help the students with their knitting and crocheting and anyone who is passionate about knitting or brightening up the streets of our city is welcome to join.

The culmination of the project was on 6.10.2019. The streets of the city were decorated with knitted works of art.
We created about 50 knitted art objects in the city.
120 pupils and students were involved.
Over 30 containers of knitted material were collected.
More than 40 meters of scarfs were entangled.
Several dozen people in various places have confused us.
An estimated 160 visitors came to guided tours.
